Picking up and carrying your baby

Your baby now can control his head, so there is no need to support his head as you did when he was newborn. Now you can pick him up simply by putting your hands under his armpits and lifting him forward toward you. This is also a very good way of putting him into a high chair: his legs will dangle and he can be slipped into the chair. Alternatively, you can lift him with one hand curled diagonally around his back and the other supporting his bottom.

You can carry your baby in the crook of your arm, against your shoulder so that he faces you, or with your arm stretched diagonally across his back and holding his thigh as he sits astride one hip. A sling can be used, although for longer journeys a backpack will give you more support.
